How to dispute credit report errors yourself (free, step by step)
You don't need to pay anyone to dispute an error. Here's the process, step by step.
Direct answer
Get your reports from AnnualCreditReport.com, identify the inaccurate items, then send each bureau a written dispute that names the item, explains why it's wrong, and includes supporting documents. Send it by a method that proves delivery. The bureau generally has 30 days to investigate. Rapid Rescore writes the letters for all three bureaus for free.
Step 1: Get all three reports
AnnualCreditReport.com is the official, federally authorized source for free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Review all three — the same account can be reported differently by each bureau.
Step 2: Pick the items worth disputing
Dispute items that are inaccurate, incomplete, or not yours.
- An account you never opened (possible identity theft).
- A balance or status that wasn't updated after you paid.
- A duplicate listing of the same debt.
- Personal details belonging to someone else.
Step 3: Write a specific letter
A strong dispute identifies you, names the account and bureau, states exactly what is wrong, and asks for correction or removal. Attach copies — never originals — of documents that support you, such as statements, payment confirmations, or a paid-in-full letter.
Step 4: Send it in a way you can prove
Keep proof of when the bureau received it, because that is when the investigation window starts. Certified mail gives you a tracking number and delivery record; standard first-class mail does not.
Step 5: Follow up
Bureaus generally have about 30 days to investigate and must send you the results. If an item is verified and you still believe it's wrong, you can send a follow-up dispute with new information or add a consumer statement.
