How long does a credit dispute take? The 30-day rule explained

The law sets the timeline, not the company you use.

Direct answer

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a credit bureau generally has 30 days from receiving your dispute to investigate, and up to 45 days if you send additional relevant information during the investigation. The clock starts when the bureau receives your dispute, so proof of delivery matters.

When the clock starts

The 30 days run from when the bureau receives your dispute, not from when you write it. That is why sending by a method with proof of delivery helps.

When it can take longer

If you provide new, relevant information after the bureau has begun its investigation, the period can be extended by up to 15 days. Disputes the bureau considers frivolous may be rejected with an explanation.

What you'll receive

When the investigation finishes, the bureau must send you the results in writing, including an updated copy of your report if anything changed. Items are corrected, deleted, or verified.

What if the item is verified?

  • Review the results and your documents.
  • Send a follow-up dispute with new evidence, or dispute directly with the company that reported it.
  • Add a consumer statement to the item.
  • If you believe the process was mishandled, you can file a complaint with the CFPB.

Speeding up what you control

You can't shorten the investigation, but you can avoid delays: send specific, documented disputes to all three bureaus at once, and use delivery proof. Rapid Rescore creates every bureau's letter in one sitting and offers certified mailing so you know the delivery date.
